Glenrothes 1988 Second Edition is a distinguished vintage release, bottled in 2016 as the follow-up to the original 1988 edition first unveiled in 2009. When selecting casks for the First Edition, then Malt Master John Ramsay set aside a number that he believed required further maturation. Seven years later, those patiently aged casks were deemed ready, resulting in this richly characterful Second Edition.
Matured in a combination of first fill American sherry-seasoned hogsheads and refill sherry butts, and bottled at a slightly higher strength of 44.1% ABV, this expression offers greater intensity and depth than the First Edition.
Current Malt Master Gordon Motion describes the whisky as offering notes of “blackcurrants, fruitcake, nutmeg and mixed peel,” while Ronnie Cox, Brand Heritage Director, calls it “a deliciously full Glenrothes made for the ultimate armchair conversation.” Honeyed, rich and creamy, it delivers a full, lingering finish layered with fruit and warming spice — a superb example of The Glenrothes’ vintage expertise.
