A Night on Earth in Scotland marks the debut entry in The Macallan’s annual limited-edition series, drawing its creative spark from Hogmanay -Scotland’s unique take on ringing in the New Year. Crafted by lead whisky maker Sarah Burgess, the expression is deeply personal, shaped by her own recollections of the festive tradition. This single malt is composed of whiskies matured in a combination of American and European oak casks seasoned with sherry, along with ex-bourbon barrels.
The use of ex-bourbon barrels lends a distinct vanilla richness to the spirit, a nod to Hogmanay’s ‘first footing’ ritual. In this custom, a dark-haired visitor arriving at a household just after midnight is believed to bring good fortune—especially when they carry traditional gifts like coal for warmth, whisky for cheer, and shortbread, whose sweet buttery flavor ties in with the whisky’s vanilla character.
The bottle itself features vibrant artwork by Japanese-French illustrator Erica Dorn, whose designs reflect the celebratory spirit of New Year festivities across the globe.
