The Daftmill 2010 Summer Batch Release is a highly sought-after Lowland single malt from the Cuthbert family's remarkable farm distillery in Fife. Daftmill operates only during the farm's quieter periods in midsummer and winter, sometimes producing as few as 100 casks per year, while the barley used for its whisky is grown on the estate itself. This release is particularly significant as summer 2010 marked the final time Daftmill distilled using Optic barley, grown in the farm's South Fields.
Distilled and filled in July 2010, the whisky matured for approximately 11 years in 25 first-fill bourbon barrels previously used by Clermont Springs Distillery in Kentucky. The casks rested on the ground floor of Daftmill's traditional dunnage warehouse before being selected for this 2021 bottling. Presented at 46% ABV, the release yielded 6,250 bottles.
The first-fill bourbon maturation complements Daftmill's elegant, fruit-led spirit, bringing layers of orchard fruit, creamy vanilla, honeyed malt, citrus, and gentle oak spice. Rich yet beautifully balanced, it retains the purity and understated character for which this tiny single-estate distillery has become so highly regarded.
